Opus 148 was a tweet that read “For those who would stand against racism and segregation, we must stand together against racism.”
It was later revealed that the tweet was fake.
The tweet was later deleted.
On Thursday, Republican Rep. Tom Cole, who is running for governor of Mississippi, retweeted a link to a story from The New York Times that claimed that President Donald Trump had not apologized to the Ku Klux Klan.
Cole wrote that the story was a “lie.”
The article, however, was also widely shared on social media.
On Wednesday, Cole announced that he would resign from the House after tweeting that the Kuomintang were “the most powerful force in the world.”
“We must stand up to the KKK and other white supremacists,” Cole tweeted.
Cole, a Republican who represents the northern Mississippi Delta, has not said why he would step down from the office.
Cole did not return a request for comment from NBC News.
